About String Theory

The vision of String Theory Music Collective is to inspire curiosity and appreciation for Early Music and an understanding of its role and relevance in today’s contemporary musical and cultural landscape. Our mission is to create innovative and memorable artistic experiences, illuminating historical connections with our current view. Presenting music in historical and modern contexts, we challenge preconceptions and provide opportunities for discovery and thoughtful engagement. We aim to build community and expand creative possibilities.

String Theory Music Collective (STMC) is a non-profit society that supports local, professional musicians who specialize in Early Music performance. Through a historically informed and innovative approach to programming, STMC aims to provide groundbreaking experiences that both honour tradition and explore new possibilities.

Performing on historical instruments, we recreate history in the present moment. With Early Music as a point of reference and departure, we find strings of continuity that bridge cultures, time periods, and artistic genres. By challenging conventions, we create unique programs that open perspectives and appeal to a diverse audience.

Through multi-disciplinary collaborations with professional and emerging artists and arts organizations we build partnerships that strengthen and contribute to the sustainability, growth, and resiliency of the arts sector in Calgary.

With our focus on scholarship and commitment to excellence, we provide leadership and learning opportunities for our colleagues and collaborators. Engaging with mentors from around the world, we advance our professional development and support our vision. We are committed to sharing our expertise and passion through educational initiatives that foster the next generation of artists and arts enthusiasts.

String Theory Music Collective was formed in 2017 by founders Joan Kent (baroque cello, viola da gamba), Louise Stuppard and Andrea Neumann (baroque violins). The collective includes local professional performers with a speciality in historical performance practice as well as our multi-disciplinary collaborative partners.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

As we grapple with the history of racial inequality and colonial roots in Early Music, String Theory seeks to take action to create a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Early Music community. Important steps have included free concerts, EDI training, and programs that celebrate diversity.
